History & Background

Founded in 2012, House on the Hill is a family-run school. We are a house of curated learning, a genuine Montessori. We believe in immersing the child in an open and stimulating environment with a curriculum of experiential learning. Thoughtful consideration is put into the entire House on the Hill experience, from lush green surroundings to the daily learning curriculum. This allows each child to develop life-long skills for their futures successes, at their own pace.

Education Philosophy

We stay true to the values and education excellence of the Montessori method. Our specially- trained Montessori educators help to ensure our curriculum instils strong language and mathematical skills, preparing each child for their next step in either local or international schools.

House on the Hill is one of a few Montessori pre-schools in Singapore with individualised curriculum, vertical – learning, and 3-hour work cycle classes. To build critical thinking skills and creative independence, we create and weave in experiences that help with fostering a lifelong love of learning. Children at House on the Hill are imbued with a lasting sense of positivity to seize every moment of life.

The curriculum covers the five key Montessori areas of learning: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Culture. Our bespoke Mandarin program focuses on engagement, culture and communication. Through intensely interactive classes and passionate teachers, the children develop a joy of learning Mandarin, and experience the language through songs, dances, games, stories, and crafts.

Special Enrichment Programmes

We offer a wide variety of enrichment programmes such as
- Mandarin Enhancement Programme
- Speech and Drama,
- Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)
- Creative and Aesthetics Programme
- Sportball

Our Mandarin Enhancement programme provides exposure to the Chinese Language and culture for the children! With cultural-based learning and Chinese Speech & Drama, we hope that the increased Mandarin exposure will cultivate the children’s love for the Chinese language and give them more opportunity to practise the use of the language!

Our Speech and Drama Programme aims to develop children to be articulate and fluent in their speech while carrying themselves confidently in public. Through role-plays, children are challenged on their perceptions about their world and themselves. They are also encouraged to express themselves through play while developing a love for the English language. This allows for a more positive and confident self-image while building the necessary social skills.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics – We are glad to partner Discover Everyday to have the children discover the wonders in everyday life. The programme has been specifically designed as a creative STEM programme for children aged between four to six years old. The children will use different modes of play such as hands-on activities and experiments, role-playing and creation of toys/models, etc to create fun active learning. Then leveraging on the experiences gained through play, they will engage the children in open-ended discussions to guide the children to arrive at the concepts.

Our Creative and Aesthetics Programme is provided by Wow ART Learnin!ng. Here our children explore the works of Joan Miro, Wu Guanzhong, Antoni Gaudi, and many more. They will learn the elements of art of colours and shades, textures, shapes, lines and dots. The variety of skills and techniques they will be exposed to will include contemporary Chinese Ink Painting, Mixed Media Painting, 3D Mosaic Sculpture and Gouache and Ink Painting.

The Sportball curriculum aims to foster an active and healthy lifestyle in children. Using appropriate coaching methods, they will introduce the fundamental concepts and sports skills behind 8 popular ball sports - baseball, rugby, basketball golf, hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball. The programmes also focus on the development of Gross Motor skills, along with balance, strength, co-ordination, stamina, timing and of course, Sportsmanship.

We were specifically looking for a Montessori school and were not disappointed! House on the Hill made the transition seamless for us upon arriving to Singapore. We were specifically looking for a Montessori school and were not disappointed! House on the Hill made the transition seamless for us upon arriving to Singapore. Aside from a fantastic menu, their facilities were incredible for a school situated in the city centre. The classrooms were big, well ventilated, and had lots of light. Our child enjoyed being around the mix of kids from multi nationalities. We also appreciated that Chinese was present in the school environment as learning new languages is so important to us. The teaching staff was fantastic, communicative and involved us in activities our child did in class. Because our child was 22 months, the curriculum involved lots of play, fun activities and imaginative things for him to do. By a month, our child was familiar with his classmates names, and was excited during drop-off.

Our daughter attended House on the Hill for a little over 2 years throughout the pandemic and through the reopening in Singapore, from the age of 2 to 4. We were very happy with the quality and attentiveness of the teaching staff. The wide variety of activities provided our daughter with many interesting experiences and we would recommend the school. We're sad to say goodbye to HotH and the staff but we are moving overseas.

Our son attended the Mt Sophia branch for 18 months . This branch ,whilst central lacks any outdoor play area but the building itself is fine being previously a school. All the staff were friendly although absenteeism was quite high but this has been during COVID. Communication with the school on admin efficient .Could do more to encourage contact between parents. Food was good .

It was the best Place to send my child to this Montessori. My child is much more confidence upfront and able to converse with adult confidently. She was exposed with new things and development. Kids watching Netflix in the regular routine. There is no educational reason for a Montessori school to let them watch TV. Montessori ist not just a marketing to get higher fees. Dear Active parents, We’re disappointed to see this unfair and factually incorrect review. We want to be clear that there are no televisions in our classrooms and the children have not been watching television or Netflix shows all day. We stand by our team and how they teach the Montessori curriculum. We are sorry that you feel that you had a bad experience, but we work hard daily to deliver a quality product that we are proud of. Overall we find it to be not value for money compared with preschools charging these rates. Enrichment that should be part of curriculum is charged extra. It’s okay that the other teaching staff are not Montessori trained, but they don’t really have a true Montessori culture. They have the work cycl... They have the work cycles and the toys and equipment but let’s just say it’s not “kosher”.It seems many nurturing teachers have left since the new principal has taken over. You’d expect a lot more especially when you’ve done a few tours around. Nice homely vibe and good outdoor playground but too rough to play in the road inside.

During pre-COVID times, the school also arrange education field trip to places like frog and sheep farm for the children to learn by experiencing. Finally they leverage on their kitchen to prepare and cook healthy meals (and snacks) for the children.

The admin/sales team is horrendous. Lack of communication, defensive (when following up on enquires). I felt like they were so cold in their correspondence to me- like I'm just a profit figure for them. This is for the Balmoral branch- not the mount Sophia one; so I'm not sure how it would differ. I felt like they were so cold in their correspondence to me- like I'm just a profit figure for them. This is for the Balmoral branch- not the mount Sophia one; so I'm not sure how it would differ. Some bright sparks like teachers and the co-founder but the biggest gripe is the lack of communication on what happens regularly. Other than that, the quality of Montessori educational materials is good.
