About the PSLE Scoring System
The current PSLE scoring system, introduced in 2021, aims to help children develop strengths and interests without focusing too heavily on academic results. Key features include:
Eligibility for SAP and Secondary Programmes: Students with higher Chinese Language scores gain an advantage for SAP schools. Specific AL requirements apply for subjects like Higher Mother Tongue and Third Languages in secondary school, helping ensure students can manage academic demands.
This approach reduces fine differentiation in scores, expands school choices, and supports students’ overall development.

- When the cut-off is determined by Higher Chinese Language (HCL), there will be the suffix D/M/P
(Distinction/Merit/Pass grade) - 2023’s cop is just a gauge. Parents and child pair need to do your due diligence to rank your 6 school choices accordingly
- Dragon year, cop may shift due to competition. Eg last year 14, this year cut off at 13
How to Rank Your Top 6 School Choices: A Guide from Experienced Parents
Here’s a strategy to help you rank your top 6 school choices based on a sample PSLE score of AL15:
First Choice – Ideal School: Choose a school with a Cut-Off Point (COP) close to your score, ideally the same or -1 point.
Example: If your score is AL15, consider a school with a COP of AL15 or AL16. Keep in mind that if the school is highly popular, competition might push the COP up to AL14, making it a slightly riskier choice.
Second Choice – Best Alternative: Pick another strong choice with the same AL or -1 point to stay within a comfortable range.
Third to Fifth Choices – Broader Range: Choose schools with COPs between AL16 and AL17 for these slots. This gives you a good mix of choices within a slightly safer range.
Sixth Choice – Safe Backup: Select a school with a COP of AL18 as your final option. While this may not be your ideal choice, it should still feel comfortable as a fallback option.
Note: Total AL score is still the first criterion for posting. The first student considered has the best PSLE Score and will be posted to the school that is their first choice.
A student’s choice order of schools will be used as one of the tie-breakers if there are two students with the same PSLE Score vying for the last place in a school. (Info courtesy of MOE)
