Kid-Friendly DIY Ideas for Your Christmas Tree!

Christmas is coming and it’s a festive time of family bonding and giving, so what better way to do so than to get your kids involved in personalising your Christmas tree! Rather than spending a bomb with store-bought ones, making your own handmade ornaments will spruce up your home in a fun and meaningful way.

Here’s how to get creative:

Level: Easy

Candy Cane

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Edible candy canes
  • Gold ribbons

Where to Buy

At any supermarket

Instructions

  1. Attach a gold ribbon to the curved part of the candy cane and tie it into a loop.
  2. Hang them on your tree! Your kids will love the idea of eating real candy canes off the tree!

Craft Tips

Change up the gold ribbons with holly leaves or little golden bells for a classy and festive look!

Glitter Bauble

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Clear plastic baubles with lid
  • White glue
  • Water
  • Coloured glitter powder
  • Ribbon

Where to Buy

You can buy the plastic baubles online. The other art supplies can be purchased at any stationery shop.

Craft Tips

Keep the little hands from shaking too vigorously to prevent accidental spills! Make sure lids are tight and upright before you start shaking.

Level: Not So Easy

Hand Print Keepsake

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Air-dry clay (Jovi brand Modelling Paste)
Rolling pin
  • Circle cutter for dough
  • Water
  • Straw
  • Ribbon
  • Acrylic paint (optional)

  • Metal paint (optional)
  • Clay varnish (glossy or matte)

Where to Buy

Art Friend or other art supply shops near you

Craft Tips

Consider using clay instead of salt dough since your little one’s skin may be sensitive to the excessive use of salt. We recommend using Jovi brand Modelling Paste that is best suited for kids and very flexible to work with. Keep a spray bottle filled with water nearby, so you can spritz some on your clay when it becomes too dry and crumbly. If using metal paints, take care to keep it out of reach of children at all times.

Popsicle Snow Flake

Supplies You’ll Need

  • 4 ice cream sticks for one snowflake

  • White glue OR glue gun
  • Glitter (optional)

  • Acrylic paints (optional)
  • Ribbon

Where to Buy

Glue gun and glue sticks can be bought at Art Friend, Nippon Home or any DIY store.

Craft Tips

Although a glue gun is handy for its quick-dry results, the tip and glue can get really hot. Never leave your glue gun unattended and the glue gun should only be used by an adult at all times.

Level: Hard

Pom Pom

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Yarn
  • Scissors

Where to Buy

Yarns can be purchased at Spotlight

Craft Tips

Tying the yarn string around the middle is the trickiest part. You may need to help your kids hold the yarn ball to make it easier.

Origami Star

Supplies You’ll Need

  • 2 pieces of coloured paper (square)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Where to Buy

Popular or Art Friend

Craft Tips

In order to balance the star on top of the tree, insert a wooden skewer stick from under the centre of the star and tie a ribbon around the skewer to the top of the tree.

There are no limits to the kinds of decorations you and your kids can make – you can use recycled items, sweets or any object worth the find to customise your decorations. Let your kids come up with their own designs and wait to be surprised by their creativity!

Have fun this Christmas!
