What Are The Types Of Cough? How to differentiate between wet (phlegmy) and dry coughs?
Coughing is a natural body phenomenon that helps clear trapped materials and secretions from the airways. It also prevents them from going to the lungs. A cough is further divided into two types.
Wet/phlegmy Cough
The cough material may be substances from the lungs or particles that have been inhaled. Most commonly, material coughed up from the airways and lungs is phlegm – a mixture of mucus, cells, and debris. Sometimes cough may also bring up blood.
- A cough is termed as productive when it brings up either phlegm or blood.
Dry Cough
Some coughs are considered dry or non-productive because they do not bring anything up. A dry cough can sound irritated, barking, harsh, or whooping.
What Causes Phlegm?
Likely causes of both dry and productive cough depend on whether it has lasted less than four weeks (acute) or four weeks or more (chronic).
Common Causes
The most common cause of acute cough (lasting less than four weeks) is
- A viral infection of the upper or lower respiratory tract
The common causes of chronic cough (lasting four weeks or more) include;
- Asthma (the most common)
- Postnasal drip (seepage of airway fluid from the nose down the throat)
Less Common Causes
An acute cough may also result from
- Less common respiratory infections such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and pertussis (whooping cough)
- Aspiration of foreign body (such as a part of a toy or a piece of food)
A chronic cough may also result from
- Hereditary disorders of lungs such as primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) or cystic fibrosis (CS)
- Aspiration of a foreign body
- Inflammatory diseases involving the airways or lungs
- Stress-related (also called habit or psychogenic cough)
- A congenital disability of the airways or lungs
How To Treat Phlegm In Children?
Most coughs are caused by viral infections and have just to run their course. It may take up to 1-2 weeks. Doctors usually don’t prescribe antibiotics for coughs of viral etiology because these drugs only work against bacteria.
You can use over-the-counter medicines like Paracetamol, which acts as a cough suppressant. Cough suppressants might help your child stop coughing, but they don’t treat the underlying cause. Be cautious also and do check the active ingredients as some cough suppressant might contain more than one drug and can cause more side effects in kids than adults.
To effectively remove phlegm, it is recommended to use expectorants which can help to dissolve phlegm and make it easier to cough out, helping to speed up the recovery process. A syrup format will be ideal as it is easier to administer to children.
